5 Things You MUST Pack for Your Next Alaska Trip

Each vacation warrants a different packing strategy, and the adventurous and outdoorsy nature of an Alaska trip means packing items for a variety of weather conditions and activities. In addition to the more traditional items often included on general packing lists, be sure to gather the following for your next Alaska cruise or land tour.

Layering clothing

When it comes to days spent exploring the wonderful wilderness, it’s important to dress appropriately. Packing and dressing in layers is key to comfort. Consider thermal underwear, a fleece, a waterproof windbreaker, and even a hat, scarf, and gloves for glacier days or shoulder season travel dates.

Shoes with good traction

For shoes, function trumps fashion! Between hiking the numerous emerald forests, strolling city streets, and traversing the glaciers, comfortable and waterproof shoes with great traction are a must.

Binoculars

Alaska is known for its wildlife, and you won’t want to miss a glimpse of a breeching whale, a soaring eagle, or a lumbering bear. You don’t need to splurge on the most professional and expensive binoculars, but pack a decent pair for spotting animals.

Sunscreen / hat

With so much consideration given to the cooler temperatures, it’s easy to forget that the sunshine can still do damage to your skin. Pack your sunscreen and protective hat (also great for rainy days!) so you can protect your skin from harmful rays.

Rain gear

July through October are the rainiest months of the year, and wet feet and clothing can really ruin an otherwise incredible day of sightseeing. Arm yourself with ample rain gear: a jacket, a hat, and waterproof shoes help you stay dry and happy.
