The Greenest Places on Earth

When we think of verdant landscapes as far as the eye can see, our brain often conjures images of Ireland, and rightly so. But there are many other gorgeous green destinations around the world waiting for you, too!
Congo Basin, Central Africa
The second largest rainforest in the world, the Congo Basin rainforest, spans six countries and is known as the “Lungs of Africa.” While it is one of the most important ecological regions in the world, it remains under constant threat from poaching, deforestation, and exploitation of its natural resources like gold and oil. The tall hardwoods provide a habitat for more than 1,000 species of birds along with African forest elephants, leopards, and mountain gorillas. The fertile land and winding Congo River create a home for several indigenous groups.
Hoh Rainforest, United States
Located on the west side of Olympic National Park, Hoh Rainforest is a temperate rainforest with thick undergrowth and canopy where the massive trees make even the tallest visitors feel small. Visitors can spot a variety of wildlife like Roosevelt Elk, Black Bears, and River Otters. Slugs, snails, and snakes thrive in the layers of ferns and moss that cover the forest floor.
Sapa Valley, Vietnam
The rice terraces carved from the steep mountainsides of Sapa have been tended to by locals for centuries. The subtropical climate provides ideal growing conditions for a variety of flora, including medicinal plants like cinnamon, ginseng, and angelica. Much of Sapa Valley is protected, as it’s located within Hoang Lien National Park.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, Costa Rica
The Costa Rica cloud forests, where the low-lying clouds provide constant moisture to the flora that grows there, feature stunning hues of green anywhere you look. Over 100 mammals, 400 birds, and 120 reptile and amphibian species make this area their habitat. Tourists can take it all in through hiking, buggy rides, traversing the suspension bridges, or even ziplining.
Val D’Orcia, Italy
The stretching countryside of southern Italy near Umbria is one of the most photogenic locations of Tuscany. The gentle green rolling hills dotted with the region’s iconic cypress trees stun in spring and summer, then ease into equally beautiful warm golden orange and red hues of autumn.
Everglades National Park, United States
The 1.5 million acres of Florida’s Everglades feel like another world. The forests, prairies, and wetlands of the national park are home to a variety of wildlife like alligators, manatees, and the elusive Florida panther. A scenic drive along the park’s roads or a boat ride through the wetlands offer visitors a truly immersive experience with Florida’s flora and fauna.
Kauai, United States
When people imagine Hawaii, it’s often the island of Kauai they are picturing. The Garden Isle boasts tropical rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and beautiful beaches, but 90% of the island isn’t accessible by car. Explore Hawaii’s oldest island by foot, boat, or helicopter and once home you’ll be dreaming about a return visit.

Killarney National Park, Ireland
Located in County Kerry, Killarney National Park flaunts its beauty and history across nearly 39 square miles of woodlands, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. Within the park’s boundaries lie many sites to be explored. Muckross House and Gardens, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland, offers guided tours of its grounds to learn about the furnishings and artifacts on display there. The crafts workshop features demonstrations of traditional spinning and weaving methods. Ross Castle, constructed in the 15th century and restored in 1970, overlooks Lough Leane and is available for independent or guided tours. For visitors who prefer riding to hiking the walking paths, the Jaunting Car excursions are a perfect way to see the parks while learning about local history from the jarveys.
