Written on February 14, 2024
For travelers with a craving for sweets, delicious desserts can be found in all reaches of the world.
In part one, our taste buds traveled to Portugal, Italy, South Africa, Germany, and the Caribbean. Here are a few more mouth-watering desserts from around the globe to tempt you to pack your bags (and your fork!) and hop on a plane!
Gulab Jamun (India)
A favorite treat at festivals and special occasions, Gulab Jamun is formed by creating a milk solid and adding flour to it to form into small dough balls for frying. Once cooked, the dough balls are soaked in syrup flavored with rosewater, cardamom, and saffron.
Sticky Toffee Pudding (Great Britain)
This classic British dessert features a moist brown sugar sponge cake topped with warm toffee sauce, occasionally served with whipped cream or ice cream. The dessert is also popular in New Zealand and Australia, where it is known as sticky date pudding. The origins of this dish may be disputed, but its deliciousness is not.
Tres Leches (Latin America)
It may have originated in Nicaragua and became country’s national pastry, but Tres Leches Cake (Three Milks Cake) is served throughout Latin America for birthdays, gradutations, and weddings. Its possible influences include other soaked cakes from around the world, like tiramisu and rum cake. The cake is prepared with a basic cake recipe and then covered in evaporated milk, condensed milk, and whole milk to make a very moist dessert.
Stroopwafel (Netherlands)
This classic Dutch treat delights the taste buds with its sweet caramel sandwiched between two thin waffles. Served atop a steaming mug of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, the warmth of the beverage gently warms and softens the caramel to create an irresistible gooey indulgence. National franchise Trader Joe’s has helped Stroopwafel reach the masses, with Americans happily purchasing packages during their seasonal availability.
Sachertorte (Austria)
The origins of Sachertorte date back to 1832, when the Austrian State Chancellor asked his kitchen staff to prepare a special dessert to wow his guests. The teenaged apprentice chef, Franz Sacher, filled in for an ailing head chef and created what became one of the most famous cakes in the world. He baked a chocolate sponge, spread it with a layer of apricot jam, and covered in a chocolate ganache glaze. This combination of flavors is savored throughout Austria, and numerous restaurants and cafes tout slices on their menus.
